Animal Rescue of the Month: Wellington Rabbit Rescue

Every month we donate food and supplies to our Animal Rescue of the Month to support their vital work in our community. This month, we are supporting Wellington Rabbit Rescue.

Founded in 2015, Wellington Rabbit Rescue is New Zealand’s longest running non-profit rabbit-focused rescue organisation. Over this time, Wellington Rabbit Rescue has rehomed more than 500 rabbits to forever homes. Wellington Rabbit Rescue offer safe refuge to animals in need, rescuing and rehabilitating abused, neglected, abandoned, injured and unwanted domestic rabbits. These rabbits receive veterinary care, and are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated (Filavac).

Importantly, Wellington Rabbit Rescue advocate for and educate the public on rabbit health, welfare and care, which includes offering educational outreach programmes on how to improve the lives of domestic rabbits. At Enriched Animals, we offer an opportunity to support our Animal Rescue of the Month by adding a donation to any order, with 100% of donations sent directly to Wellington Rabbit Rescue at the end of the month. If you would prefer to donate directly, you can do so through the Wellington Rabbit Rescue Givealittle page.

Rabbits are the third most common companion animal in New Zealand (after dogs and cats), yet they are also the most misunderstood and most likely to be neglected. While rabbits can live up to 14 years, the average lifespan of domestic rabbits is just over 4 years. Domestic rabbits are often kept alone, are inadequately housed in enclosures that are well below the minimum space requirements outlined by the Rabbit Welfare Association Foundation and SPCA, are fed inappropriate diets, and do not receive sufficient medical care, all of which significantly contribute to reducing their life expectancy. Rabbits are also not well-protected by New Zealand’s current legislative welfare standards, which means that domestic rabbits are particularly at risk of welfare compromise.

At Enriched Animals, we have carefully-curated The Rabbit Edit collection to enrich the lives of your rabbit companions and support their welfare needs through a variety of methods. Our Enriched Home collection also offers purpose-built environments to enrich your rabbit’s home by reducing stress, increasing confidence, and encouraging exploration and play behaviour.

Together we can make a difference.
