Animal Rescue of the Month: Saving Hope Foundation

Every month we donate food and supplies to a nominated ‘Animal Rescue of the Month’ to support their important work in our community. This month, we are supporting The Saving Hope Foundation.

Founded in 2017, the Saving Hope Foundation is one of New Zealand’s largest no-kill dog rescue organisations. Since its commencement, Saving Hope has rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed over 1,500 dogs – and that number keeps growing! With the motto, ‘No Dog Left Behind’, Saving Hope work to ensure that every dog receives the help and care that it needs, irrespective of cost. As a no-kill animal rescue, Saving Hope do not allow any dog to be euthanised without every effort being made to make them well and find a loving, forever home. Saving Hope receive no local council or government funding, and rely on the kindness and generosity of their supporters to continue doing the important work that they do. At Enriched Animals, we offer an opportunity to support our Animal Rescue of the Month by adding a donation to any order, with 100% of donations sent directly to The Saving Hope Foundation at the end of this month. If you would prefer to donate directly, you can do so here.

"With the motto, ‘No Dog Left Behind’, Saving Hope work to ensure that every dog receives the help and care that it needs"

It all began with a pit bull puppy named Hope. The Saving Hope Foundation was born from a community effort to save a 4-week-old puppy that was malnourished, dehydrated and in need of medical care – yet due to be euthanised at the pound because of her breed. Following a widespread public campaign to save Hope’s life, she was seized by the SPCA and fostered until she was old enough to join her forever home with a Saving Hope Foundation family member. Hope is now a happy, healthy and gentle dog, and an important reminder that there are so many other dogs that need hope.

"The focus needs to be on education about responsible dog guardianship, rather than breed specific legislation."

Unfortunately, breed specific legislation in New Zealand prohibits or limits the guardianship of dogs based solely upon their breed. Irrespective of behaviour, thousands of dogs are routinely euthanised in New Zealand pounds without any assessment for their potential for rehoming because of their breed. Despite thousands of dogs being euthanised every year as a result of their breed, the number of injuries caused by dogs has remained relatively constant over time. This suggests that the focus needs to be on education about responsible dog guardianship, rather than breed specific legislation. There are a number of ways that you can help support local initiatives that are working to elevate the status of all dogs, regardless of breed, including donating, fundraising, fostering or adopting! Saving Hope can only save as many dogs as there are homes, so if you would like to adopt, or if you can provide a dog with love and care while they wait for their forever homes, Saving Hope would love to hear from you!

An important part of responsible guardianship is ensuring that your canine companion has an enriched environment, with opportunities to express natural, species-specific behaviour. At Enriched Animals, we have carefully-curated The Dog Edit collection to enrich the lives of your canine companions and support their welfare needs through a variety of methods. Our Enriched Home™ Double-Tiered Bed also offers a purpose-built space for your small dog or pup to rest and relax!

Together we can work to give dogs happy and healthy lives.
