Animal Rescue of the Month: Auckland Cavy Care

Every month we donate food and supplies to a nominated ‘Animal Rescue of the Month’ to support their important work in our community. This month, we are supporting Auckland Cavy Care.

Dedicated to educating the public on guinea pig welfare, Auckland Cavy Care seek to improve the standards of housing, diet and care for guinea pigs.

Auckland Cavy Care rescue, rehabilitate and rehome guinea pigs – and at times, rabbits too. Dedicated to educating the public on guinea pig welfare, Auckland Cavy Care seek to improve the standards of housing, diet and care for guinea pigs. Established almost a decade ago, Auckland Cavy Care have rescued several hundreds of guinea pigs. Many of these guinea pigs were abandoned on the streets, or surrendered by those who are no longer able to care for them. The guinea pigs are housed at Auckland Cavy Care or at a foster home while a loving, forever home is sought. As Auckland Cavy Care are a small, home-based rescue organisation, they rely on the support of donations to contribute towards necessary veterinary treatment, de-sexing, food and hay. At Enriched Animals, we offer an opportunity to support our Animal Rescue of the Month by adding a donation to any order, with 100% of donations sent directly to Auckland Cavy Care at the end of this month. If you would prefer to donate directly, you can do so here.

Although they are small, guinea pigs can live up to 7-10 years, so it is important to remember that they are a long-term commitment.

Each year, guinea pigs are abandoned in the months that follow Christmas – purchased for children and then dumped when families realise they can no longer give them the attention that they need. Although they are small, guinea pigs can live up to 7-10 years, so it is important to remember that they are a long-term commitment. Guinea pigs are also a social species, and thrive in the company of their own kind. If you are considering the addition of a guinea pig to your family, please consider adopting a bonded pair of rescued guinea pigs. If you are uncertain whether guinea pigs would be a good fit for your family’s lifestyle, you can volunteer to foster first. As Auckland’s only rescue organisation with a focus on guinea pigs, Auckland Cavy Care aims to care for and re-home as many guinea pigs as possible, but to do this they need the support of dedicated foster homes. If you can provide love and care while they wait for their forever homes, or wish to adopt a bonded pair, Auckland Cavy Care would love to hear from you!
